7 Common Bin Mistakes: How to avoid extra fees and headaches.

June 15, 20265 min read

Renting a bin should be the easiest part of your project. You book it, we drop it, you fill it, and we haul it away.

But for some homeowners and contractors in Simcoe County, a simple rental can turn into a financial headache. Hidden "tipping fees," penalties for mixed waste, and failed delivery charges can double your costs if you aren't careful.

At Tor Bin Rental, we want your disposal to be as fast and predictable as possible. Here are the 7 most common mistakes people make: and exactly how to avoid them to keep your budget on track.

1. Ignoring the "Mixed Waste" Penalty

In Simcoe County, what you put in the bin matters just as much as how much it weighs. The transfer station is strict about sorting.

  • The Regular Rate: Garbage and general waste are billed at $120 per metric tonne for additional weight.

  • What’s included: A Regular Rate bin already includes the first 1 metric tonne of disposal.

  • The Penalty Rate: If you mix recyclables (cardboard, scrap metal, tires) into a general garbage bin, the transfer station can reclassify the entire load as "Difficult Mixed Waste."

  • The Cost: This jumps your rate to $325 per metric tonne, which can seriously increase your final bill for the exact same weight.

✅ Solution: Keep a separate pile for scrap metal, tires, and clean cardboard. If you have a massive amount of one material (like shingles or yard waste), ask us about our Shingle & Yard Waste specialized bins to get a better rate. If you're disposing of clean fill, keep each material separate too. Mixing clean fill materials like soil, concrete, and asphalt can trigger a $325 sorting fee. And if you mix general waste into a clean fill bin, the load can be classified as Difficult Mixed Waste at $325 per metric tonne.

2. Overfilling Above the Rim

It’s tempting to squeeze "one last chair" onto the top of the pile. Don’t do it.

⚠️ SAFETY WARNING: We are legally required to tarp every load before we hit the road. If debris is poking out above the rim (the "Mount Everest" effect), we cannot safely cover the bin.

  • The Result: Our drivers may refuse to pick up the bin until it is leveled.

  • The Cost: You’ll be hit with a $100 overload fee for loading more than 6 inches above the max fill line. If we have to leave without taking the bin, a failed pickup or delivery attempt is $65.

✅ Solution: Always keep your waste level with the top edge of the bin and never more than 6 inches above the max fill line. If you see it getting close, stop loading and book a swap.

3. Hiding Prohibited "Hazardous" Items

Trying to bury a propane tank or an old car battery at the bottom of the bin is a gamble that rarely pays off. Transfer station staff inspect loads as they are dumped.

  • The Risk: Items like asbestos, explosives, ammunition, and propane tanks are strictly prohibited.

  • The Fine: Simcoe County can charge a $250 penalty per incident plus any extra cleanup costs they incur.

✅ Solution: If you have chemicals, paint, or hazardous materials, take them to a designated Household Hazardous Waste (HHW) drop-off. Most are free for residents if you bring them separately!

4. Choosing the Wrong Size (The "Goldilocks" Problem)

Estimating waste is hard. Most people underestimate how much debris a kitchen gut or a deck tear-down creates.

  • If the bin is too small: You end up paying for two deliveries and two base rentals.

  • If the bin is too large: You’re paying for "air" and a higher base rate than you needed.

If you are doing:

  • Small Bathroom / Garage Cleanout: A 10-yard bin is usually plenty.

  • Kitchen Remodel / Deck Removal: Go for the 14-yard or 15-yard.

  • Full House Gut / Major Construction: You’ll likely need our 20-yard bin.

✅ Solution: When in doubt, go one size up. It is almost always cheaper to have extra space in one bin than it is to pay for a second delivery. Check out our available bin sizes to see what fits your project.

5. Blocking the "Drop Zone"

Our trucks need room to breathe. A common mistake is booking a delivery but leaving a car in the driveway or a pile of gravel in the way.

  • The Clearance: We need a clear, straight path for the truck to back in.

  • The Headache: If we arrive and can't drop the bin because of a locked gate or a parked car, we have to move on to our next customer.

✅ Solution: Ensure the delivery area is 100% clear at least one hour before your scheduled delivery window. Failed pickup or delivery attempts are $65, and if our driver has to wait more than 30 minutes, a $95/hr wait fee can apply. Deliveries and pickups are available Monday to Friday, 7am to 5pm only. If you aren't sure about the space, contact us to confirm.

6. Ruining Your Driveway Surface

Standard dumpsters have heavy steel rollers that can crush asphalt or scrape concrete when they are dropped and dragged.

  • The Damage: If you hire a company that doesn't use protection, you could be looking at hundreds of dollars in driveway repairs once the bin is gone.

✅ Solution: At Tor Bin Rental, our bins are specifically designed to be driveway-safe. We use reinforced skids and placement techniques that ensure your property stays exactly the way we found it: minus the junk.

7. Forgetting the "Special Item" Fees

Some items come with extra disposal charges that are not covered by standard weight-based pricing.

  • Mattresses/Box Springs:$10 each.

  • Freon Appliances: Fridges, freezers, and other Freon appliances are $50 each.

  • Tires:$20 each.

  • The Mistake: Not mentioning these when you book. If we find these items buried in a "household waste" bin, those extra fees will show up on your final invoice.

✅ Solution: Be transparent! When you use our online booking system, let us know if you’re tossing mattresses, tires, or appliances so we can give you an accurate quote upfront.

How Our Pricing Saves You Money

We offer two simple ways to pay, so you can pick the one that fits your project best. Just keep in mind that a 14% fuel surcharge also applies:

  1. Regular Rate (The "Pay-As-You-Go"): You pay a low base rental fee, the first 1 metric tonne of disposal is included, and any additional weight is charged at $120 per metric tonne. A simple fit when you want flexible pricing.

  2. All-In Rate (The "No Surprises"): A flat fee that includes disposal for approved light household and renovation waste. This is the best choice when you want predictable pricing. Shingles, soil, concrete, and other heavy materials are not allowed in All-In bins.
